Tour of the historic center and the Sassi in Ape Calessino

Duration: 40 – 50 minutes
Cost: starting from € 20.00 per person

A complete tour of the historic center and the Sassi in Ape Calessino with panoramic stops and the opportunity to discover curiosities and anecdotes about the recent history of the city of Matera.
The guided tour in the Ape Calessino lasts about one hour. We will walk through the Sassi and the Piano area, that is the modern area built close to the ancient districts, and you will have the opportunity to get to know the most important historical and cultural sites of the historic center.

Route and main stages

The Piano area is where churches and palaces are concentrated that reproduce different artistic and architectural styles, churches such as San Giovanni Battista or that of the New Purgatory are unique examples of their kind.
At the same time, buildings, such as the noble palaces or Palazzo Lanfranchi, current seat of the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata, testify how from the seventeenth century onwards Matera has been affected by economic and social changes that defined the basis of the difference between who lived in the Sassi and who lived on the plain.

Through this itinerary, in which the various aspects of the city are well balanced, you will have the opportunity to discover the path that led Matera to be defined as the “shame of Italy”, to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, finally, to be proclaimed the European Capital of Culture for 2019.

The tour is completely customizable: we will define the starting point, the arrival point and all the details of the route together, after I have listened to your needs and after I have had the opportunity to advise you.
